The department for competitions of USI Vienna can look back on a highly successful academic year 2022/23. The diversity of championships was expanded by 8 additional sports, and the overall participation increased significantly by 85.3%, from 2,490 participants to 4,614 participants compared to the previous year. Additionally, remarkable successes were achieved at both the national and international levels.
The substantial increase in participants in local Vienna Academic Championships can be attributed to the removal of all legal COVID-19 restrictions and the continuous development of the competition program on a strategic and operational level.A new development in the academic year 2022/23 is the strengthened cooperation with education. In collaboration with the Institute of Sports and Exercise Science (ISBW) and numerous dedicated lecturers, a system was created where students could earn academic performance credits by participating in Academic Championships. Successful and costeffective collaborations were also established with professional associations, external sports providers, and clubs.On a national level, USI Vienna reflects on a highly successful competitive season in the academic year 2022/23. Athletes and teams sent by USI Vienna achieved top positions and victories at almost all UNISPORT Austria Championships (UAM) within the Vienna university sector. Internationally, the University of Vienna demonstrated its excellence with numerous top placements. Especially in rowing, the University of Vienna had great success in numerous regattas in 2023. In addition to participating in the traditional Regata Storica in Venice, the University of Vienna excelled at the European Universities Rowing Championships 2023 in Bydgoszcz, Poland! With two gold and one bronze medal, the University of Vienna secured the 3rd place among all European universities. These outstanding achievements in rowing, along with the victory of the University of Vienna's women's basketball team and many other remarkable placements at European Universities Championships, resulted in the University of Vienna achieving a top-10 position in the medal table among all 508 participating institutions in 2023.This remarkable success is based on the efforts and performances of the University of Vienna, Unisport Austria, the University Sports Center, the University Sports Institute Vienna, numerous association members, coaches, and, of course, all participating students. In summary, it can be stated that in the academic year 2022/23, the University of Vienna was by far the most successful university, both nationally and internationally, among all higher education institutions in Austria.
